This is the first in a series of articles about marketing your website on the internet.
Today, I want to stress the importance of communicating with your website visitors via email. Those visitors who are truly interested in your products or services will normally be willing to give you their email address in exchange for more (free) information. What you do with the list of emails that you collect is very important.
I have worked with some businesses who simply collect addresses, which they plan to use for an email marketing campaign at some unspecified dat e in the future. I can not recommend this method. After all, if you’re going to collect the addresses, you might as well communicate with them, right? Actually, they are normally hoping and expecting that you will contact them soon, if not right away.
What we’ve chosen to do for most of our own marketing efforts, and what we always recommend to our clients, is that you set up auto-responder emails so that you can give them some information right away, and even continue the communication over the next few days and weeks. All you have to do is come up with a general information letter that you would want to send out, and have it sent automatically. Within that letter, you can give them personal emails that you may not want to have on the website itself (due to spam issues), so that they can get more personal attention.
We’ve found that this simple technique saves us countless hours in responding personally to every initial contact from our site, and allows people to find out more from us in a timely manner. It’s a win-win situation for both the company and the visitor.
